Meet the Torrance Team Behind Mercer Roofing Co Torrance
Every roof we work on in Torrance gets the same thing: a crew that shows up on time, badges in at the door, and treats your home like it’s in their own neighborhood. Our local team is small enough that you’ll recognize the same faces from the estimate to the final inspection, and experienced enough to handle everything from a small leak in Old Torrance to a full re-roof in Southwood. These are the people who answer when you call, climb the ladder, and make sure the job is done right the first time. No subcontractors, no revolving door of day laborers. Just us, on your roof, doing the work we’d want done on ours.
Our People
Grant Whitlock, Owner
Grant founded Mercer Roofing Co in 2000 and still walks every roof before work begins. He’s the one who climbs up with a flashlight, checks the flashing around your chimney, and tells you straight what’s fixable and what’s not. After 25 years in Southern California sun, he can read a roof’s age by the way the granules wear near the eaves. He’s the first to admit the marine layer in Torrance does more damage than most homeowners realize, and he’ll point out exactly where it’s working against your underlayment. When he’s not on a ladder, he’s at his kid’s baseball games in El Camino Village, usually still talking about ventilation.
Marcus D., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with Mercer for 14 years and is the guy who trains everyone else. He’s certified on GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning systems, and he’s the one we send when a roof has been patched so many times that nobody’s sure what’s underneath anymore. Marcus can spot a nail pop from the driveway and tell you whether it’s cosmetic or the first sign of decking trouble. He lives in North Torrance and keeps a photo album on his phone of the worst roofs he’s ever encountered, which he’ll gladly show you if you ask. His rule: no job is done until the gutters are clean and the driveway is swept.
Elena R., Service Coordinator
Elena is the voice on the other end of the phone when you call, and she’s been with us since 2016. She knows the Torrance permit office by first name and can tell you exactly what paperwork your neighborhood needs before we touch a shingle. Before a technician arrives, Elena sends you their name, photo, and the time they’ll be at your door, so you’re never surprised by a stranger in your driveway. She grew up in Torrance and can tell you which streets have the strictest HOA rules and which inspectors are picky about edge metal. If a repair is under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, she’s the one who schedules the follow-up visit, free, no questions asked.
Diego V., Apprentice
Diego joined the crew two years ago and is the youngest member of the team. He’s working toward his installer certification and spends most days learning from Marcus, hauling bundles up ladders, and getting a masterclass in how flashing actually works. He holds the safety harness record on the crew and is the reason our fall-protection checks never slip. Diego’s specialty right now is gutter and downspout work, and he’s the one who will walk your property after a job to make sure every bracket is tight and every seam is sealed. He’s from Carson originally and will tell you, without being asked, that the best tacos in the South Bay are on Western Avenue.
Styles & brands we work with

One Standard, Every Job
Every Mercer Roofing Co location operates under the same Threshold Verified standard, which means the same rules apply whether you’re in Torrance or any other city we serve. Every technician is background-checked and identity-verified before they ever set foot on your property. Every person who arrives at your door wears a clean, marked uniform and carries a photo ID badge they’ll show you without being asked. Every estimate comes with a written price before any work starts, and every repair includes a written guarantee covering the work for 365 days. If something isn’t right within that year, we come back and make it right, free of charge. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s the operating agreement every independently owned Mercer location lives by.

AfterWhy It Matters on Your Roof
Torrance has its own set of roofing challenges, and we’ve spent years learning exactly what they are. The marine layer off the Pacific means moisture sits on north-facing roof planes longer than most homeowners expect. That slow, persistent damp is what accelerates shingle granule loss and rots underlayment, especially on homes built before the current ventilation codes. Meanwhile, the inland neighborhoods like West Torrance and the areas around Del Amo see more direct afternoon sun, which means thermal expansion pulls at old fasteners and loosens flashing joints over time. A crew that doesn’t understand the difference will treat every roof the same. We don’t.
We also know that many Torrance homes built in the 1960s and 1970s still have original sheathing that wasn’t rated for the remodels they’ve gone through. When we tear off an old roof in those neighborhoods, we often find decking that needs selective replacement before the new underlayment goes down. That’s exactly the kind of thing a written line-item estimate covers, so you know before we start why the decking matters and what it costs to fix it properly. No surprise change orders. No “we discovered a problem” calls that double your bill. The price we hand you before work begins is the price you pay, unless you ask to change the scope yourself.
Manufacturer brands matter in Torrance because of the microclimates. We install and repair GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, and Boral, and we’ll tell you which ones hold up best on your specific roofline. Some shingle lines have better wind ratings for the gusty afternoons near the coast, while others handle long sun exposure with less thermal wear. We’d rather explain the differences in plain English at your kitchen table than let you guess from a brochure. That conversation always ends the same way: with a written price in your hand and no obligation to say yes.
Frequently Asked Questions
You’ll get a specific name, photo, and arrival window before anyone from Mercer Roofing Co shows up. The person at your door will be wearing a marked uniform and carrying a photo ID badge they’ll present when they arrive. That’s the Threshold Verified standard, and it applies to every visit, whether it’s a small repair in Seaside or a full installation in Southwood. Call (424) 435-5428 to schedule a free estimate and we’ll tell you exactly who’s coming.
No. The crew that works on Torrance roofs is our own team, trained under the Threshold Group quality framework. Marcus leads the installers, Diego works under him, and Grant personally walks every roof before work begins. You won’t see a different set of faces on day three than you saw on day one. If you have a roofing project and want to know who’ll be on the job, call (424) 435-5428 and ask us directly.
It covers every repair we make for a full year after the work is done. If the repair fails within 365 days, we return and fix it again at no charge. That’s the second visit included free, not a prorated discount or a “we’ll take a look” promise. It’s a written guarantee on every repair, handed to you with your paperwork, not hidden in fine print. If you want to know exactly what’s covered on your specific job, call (424) 435-5428 and we’ll walk you through it.
